FIIL CC PRO2 REVIEW

>>I am brazilian and I speak portuguese, so forgive my english, I’ll use translator tools to help<<

INTRO:

After a long time without review a TrueWireless (TWS) earphone, we are back with the FIIL CC Pro2. The last one I evaluated was the FIIL T2 PRO, I really liked this model, however, the TWS just stopped being manufactured and disappeared from planet earth… that’s a pity, it was very good. The expectation is that this new model launched in 2022 can bring even more quality than the aforementioned model.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS:

TWS reviews are usually a little higher than wiredearphones, so I’ll try to be as brief as possible to the evaluation doesn’t get too big. The quality of TWS earphones nowadays is already very high, and this type of equipment is already very popular too, so I think I don’t need to describe all the details like I did before. The FIIL CC Pro2 is the company’s flagship (at the time of writing this review).

-The evaluation was made with the original eartips in size M.

Bluetooth connectivity. Without a doubt this was the bluetooth device that I managed to reach the longest distance away from the source (smartphone), it was until today the TWS that I managed to go further without the signal being interrupted (more than 10 meters easily). The signal stability was also excellent, I walked around the house and it got more and more distant and with more walls between the TWS and the Smartphone, the result is that there were no connection failures, the music didn’t stop, I was very impressed, and my smartphone’s bluetooth is still version 5.0, the CC Pro2 is already version 5.3.

Application. FIIL provides an App for Android and iOS that has several functions. I think that instead of commenting all the functions, it would be better to put some screenshots of the app, it’s very self-explanatory and the review doesn’t get huge.

PS1: The LDAC codec doesn’t work with Low Latency Game or Video mode, only in Music mode. In the first two mentioned modes, the corresponding codec here was SBC.

PS2: In case the person doesn’t have much experience with equalizers, the App has 12 ready-made presets already available.

PS3: I noticed that the App is missing an “exit” button, so after I enter the App it stays open all the time, I have to close the task through Android for the App to turn off. There’s always a message in the notification bar: “fiil+ is running”. At least here for me it appears, I don’t know on other devices.

Latency test. In my tests here, the CC Pro2 didn’t show delay between the image and the sound, I used the 3 available modes (Game, Video, Music) and didn’t notice delay with any of them. I was able to watch some videos on YouTube and the sync was perfect, I didn’t even notice difference between the available modes, they are all very fast.

Charging case. The big differential of the CC Pro2 is this case in an open style, I found this design very interesting because: why do we need a lid if the earphones are fixed by magnetism? All the latest TWS models already have very strong magnets that don’t let the earphones fall out, even if the lid is open. Here on the CC Pro2 it was no different, the earphones doesn’t fall out at all, not even with them facing downwards and using force, they don’t fall. Without a doubt it’s the most practical TWS case I’ve ever tested, it’s really easy to take the earphones out, just push them up with your finger and that’s it, you can even take them out using just one hand. It took a little over 2 hours to fully charge the case with the earphones inside (using the USB port on my notebook).

Touch controls. The CC Pro2 is controlled by gestures, and the rods are the parts where the TWS will receive the commands. In my experience with the earphone, it was very responsive to commands, now I confess that I felt a little difficult at first with regard to handling, I had not yet tested any other TWS in which the touch was in such a “thin” place as the CC PRO2 here, but with the practice I went adapting.

Auto Pause and Resume. The CC Pro2 has the function of pausing the music if you take the earphones out of your ear (one side or both), and when you put them back on, the music returns from where it left off. This function can be disabled by the App if the user doesn’t find this feature convenient.

The fit and comfort. Two questions that are subjective. First, let’s talk about the fit. The FIIL CC Pro2 has a fit that’s sort of diagonal, similar in style to the Apple Airpods Pro. The body of the TWS is well “seated” in my shells, well padded. The stability is good, without slacks. Something I didn’t find interesting about the design of the CC Pro2 is that it has an oval nozzle and is also very short. In my experience, I could see that the best shape is still the circle-shaped nozzle (but of course this is subjective). The oval nozzle can also make it difficult to find compatible eartips, and because as short, it can make insertion difficult in smaller ears (this is where you need to test it in practice cause this is subjective). I still think the FIIL T2 PRO has a better fit in my ears, although the CC Pro2 has a good fit too. I would recommend it for light day-to-day activities, such as using it in the office, going for a walk, or at most for weight training, more than that, I think the fixation could be compromised. The insertion I found from shallow to medium. The isolation I found average. Comfort is good, the earphone is light, its body is very anatomical, it didn’t generate pressure points. I found it good for long listening.

Microphone. This is a feature that I don’t usually use, I just did a test with an App on my smartphone and found the audio quality to be average, neither so bad nor so good. Honestly, the quality of the FIIL T2 Pro Mic was even a little better than this one.

Accessories. Of included accessories, in addition to the 3 pairs of eartips, the CC Pro2 only comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable that serves to charge the case (recharging base).

PS: I saw a model of protective cover for the CC Pro2 on the internet, a pity that it doesn’t come with the product and FIIL also doesn’t sell the accessory in its official store.

SOUND ASPECTS:

The sound of the FIIL CC Pro2 I consider as a Warm Mild V-shape. By the frequency response graph (FR) it seems that the sound is close to neutral, however, the sound in real life – to my ears – is a little different from what I understand as neutrality. For me the CC Pro2 showed bass with a lot of dynamics, recessed mids and more moderate treble.

Bass. Let’s start with the bass. In terms of quantity we have something interesting. Here is an earphone that walks between moderate bass and high bass (but nothing too loud). But how would that be? Let me explain: if you are listening to genres that have a lot of activity in the bass region, such as electronic music or Hip-Hop, the bass of the CC Pro2 will offer a good amount, whereas if you are listening to calmer genres, then the bass is in a moderate level. It’s true that for me the bass are the most prominent frequencies in this earphone, although I say again that they are not excessive bass. Sub-bass and mid-bass I consider to be “in line”, both regions are present and there’s no greater emphasis on one over the other.

Speaking of bass in terms of quality, we have bass that is strong, full, authoritative, with mass, meat and texture. The bass has a good extension, reaching the deepest notes showing a lot of activity. The impact is very audible and it was one of the things that caught my attention in this earphone, in some songs you feel the “punch” of a bass drum. The bass brings physicality to the presentation, and in some circumstances they even lean towards a more “boomy” characteristic, however, they don’t sound boomy (in my opinion), certainly if they had more amount there they would really get into the boomy bass zone, but I think they stop at the ideal limit. The CC Pro2’s bass doesn’t invade the mids (also at the limit). I think the definition is good/Ok. Bass guitar gets a lot of body here in the CC Pro2.

Mids. The midrange of the CC Pro2 I found to have a more recessed midrange characteristic. The initial mids are very smooth and instruments like snare drums always sound softly, without harshness or aggressiveness, while the upper mids are just a little more prominent in the presentation, but continue in the same proposal as the initial mids, always with a more recessed and subtle characteristic. Generally, this type of more relaxed mids is always found in TWS earphones so that they can be earphones that please a wider range of people, so the CC Pro2 brings more relaxed and comfortable mids. For my taste, I prefer sounds with a touch more clarity in this region, so that there is more transparency in voices or wind instruments, for example (subjective to my taste).

Voices. In my opinion, the CC Pro2 matched more with male/low voices than with female/high voices. The earphones have that warmth that comes from the bass region, so it ends up benefiting the lower timbre voices, and so we can feel much more texture and vibration from the vocal cords of baritone singers and contralto singers. High timbre voices in the CC Pro2 aren’t bad, but it isn’t excellent for extracting the greatest potential from this type of voice either. For me, my music library is mostly male/low voices, so the CC Pro2 matched a lot of what I listened to here.

Treble. The CC Pro2’s treble in terms of quantity, I think are at a moderate level. Presence is enough to have treble, nothing more and nothing less. People who don’t like very high treble will enjoy the CC Pro2, the amount here is always the same, in whatever musical genre you put it. You can feel that the earphone has a slight roll-off in the higher frequencies, but I didn’t think it affected the treble extension, just the sound is a little more “low”.

In terms of quality, the treble of the CC Pro2 are smooth, calm, linear, they are even well polished by the way. The details is OK, it’s not something that stands out in the treble of this earphone (it could be better in my opinion). The sparkle is very discreet, it will appear in a very smooth way, without coloring. It lacks a little more airy for my taste. The treble of the CC Pro2 aren’t strident, aren’t harsh, aren’t sharp, aren’t fatiguing, and they don’t have sibilance at any moment, that is, without sounds of “shhhh” or “SSsss” disturbing the music reproduction. They are the type of treble that with Metal music type don’t generate fatigue. Hi-Hats play very smooth and without harshness, drum cymbals don’t bother, guitar solos don’t “pierce”, carillon sounds very calm and without show coloration.

Soundstage and imaging. I thought the soundstage was very good, it has a little bit of everything, depth, height and width, but it’s not a TWS with a three-dimensional presentation. I found the stage interesting because this is a TWS earphone, and this type of equipment usually doesn’t have much internal space to position the drivers, they are already very close to the nozzle, which in my opinion can also influence the feel of the soundstage. The Instrumental separation I found reasonable/Ok. Nothing extreme precision in spacing between instruments, but it’s not an imprecise presentation either. Something average.

MAF (My Audio Filter). There are 4 modes: ANC mode; Wind canceling mode; Open mode; Monitor mode. As everyone already knows, Anti Noise Canceling (ANC) is the technology that reduces external noise in a few decibels. I like to use the word “reduce” because to me that’s exactly what happens, a reduction of external sounds. Some people say that this technology “blocks” external noise, but I think that the level of technology – at least in the TWSs I tested – isn’t there yet (in my opinion).

So, in my tests the 4 modes in practice it resumes to 2 modes only, ANC and Open mode, that’s because Wind mode and Monitor mode are very similar to Open mode. So, basically we have: the ANC that reduces the noise of the low frequencies, softening the most lower sounds. Already some more upper mids and treble sounds the ANC isn’t so effective (in my opinion). Open mode works very well, it opens the microphones and you can hear the surrounding sounds without much difficulty.

Driver Flex Test. CC Pro2 is a Single DD (single dynamic speaker per side), so when it’s like that, we need to test if it has the Driver Flex noise. I can say that the CC Pro2 didn’t have the sound of Drivex Flex during the time I evaluated the product.

Music is subjective, so below is the list of some musical genres that I personally think that was better with this IEM. Remember that were only few genres and few artists tested. If I describe that one genre was better and the other don’t, it doesn’t mean that you can’t listen to your favorite music genre with this IEM and love it. So, here goes:

Better:

Hip Hop
Reggae
EDM
POP
Rock
Blues
Metal
Samba*

*Brazilian musical genres.

Not so much:

Classical
Jazz
MPB*
Bossa Nova*
